A Hot Blue Dasher

This Blue Dasher (Pachydiplax longipennis) is showing off a classic pose that some dragonflies and damselflies use to stay cool on hot sunny days. It's called the Obelisk pose and in it the abdomen is pointed at the sun. That lets the shadow minimize how much sun is hitting the rest of the abdomen. In this case having the dragonfly use a Cardinal flower (Lobelia cardinalis) as it's resting post adds some extra color.
